The relationship between OLs and students of the School and their parents has always been strengthened through sporting challenges. Traditionally football and cricket have been the mainstay of such challenges, however with Association Day now including the 140 Year Tennis Tournament, attention has turned to the other popular sport amongst OLs, Golf.
Every year in May students and OLs play for the Presidents Cup and as this year the outgoing Head Boy Rhys Noye-Allen is a very keen golfer and to coincide with the 140th Year Anniversary celebrations we are delighted to add the Head Boy Golf Challenge to the Lyonian Association calendar.
Thursday 7th July was very warm indeed with temperatures in the 30’s, it was going to be a challenging round. Mr Ian Parker (JLS) worked closely with Mr John Davies (Sec OL Golf Society) to attract players from the OLs, masters, student and parent community, with several father and son combinations.
Everybody gathered for photographs and final instructions before heading off to their allocated tees for a shot gun start, the signal was given and everybody teed off at 1.15pm.
Some holes were more challenging than others with the dry ground conditions but spirits were high and with plenty of water and sun protection on board everybody made it round unscathed.
Once finished the golfers retired to the Lyonian Pavilion at the JLS Sudbury playing fields to enjoy cold drinks, a delightful summer meal, prepared and served by the JLS catering team, and the presentation of prizes.
As has become traditional at any gathering of OLs a couple of picture quizzes were enjoyed ‘Know your course’ and ‘British Open Winners across the Years’. With the tables decorated with a golfing theme a very pleasant evening was enjoyed. Providing another excellent opportunity for the Old Lyonian and John Lyon School community to come together at a Lyonian Association event.
