Midsummer Music & BBQ – OLs welcome PDF Print E-mail

The Music Department will be hosting an afternoon/evening event on Sunday 22nd June 2008 in support of The John Lyon School Antarctica Expedition 2009, where six Sixth-Form boys will travel to the southernmost continent to ski “The Last Degree” (60 nautical miles) to the South Pole. All proceeds from ticket sales and money raised on the day will help fund this multiple world-record attempt.

The afternoon will consist of a varied concert in the Music School, featuring piano performances from Stuart Miles and Jo Rowley Jones, percussion from Drum Blondes (myself and a friend from my Royal College of Music days), the debut of The Lyonian Singers - a choir consisting of staff and parents, Quintessential – a Sixth-Form piano and vocal group and performances from other members of the Music Department staff and pupils. A full programme will be available nearer the time.

A barbecue will then be served in The Red House Gardens for the duration of the afternoon, accompanied by a professional band, Nashville Sounds, who feature in 60’s/70’s and Country & Western music. An outdoor stage will be set up overlooking the lawn area. After the barbecue, strawberries & cream will be served along with other summer refreshments. Pimms and other alcoholic drinks with be provided. However, please also feel free to bring your own.

This will, I hope, provide not only a chance to learn more about the Antarctica Expedition and to help the team reach their fundraising target, but also will be an opportunity for the parents, staff and Old Lyonians to enjoy some excellent music-making in a relaxed, social environment.

Tickets are priced at £10 per adult and £7.50 for students and children.
To purchase tickets, please print off and post back the booking form to the address given – click here. Cheques should be made payable to: “The John Lyon School”. Alternatively, tickets are available from the Music Department at School - Tel: 020 8872 8424.

I hope you and your family can join us for what looks to be an enjoyable summer’s afternoon.

Yours Sincerely

Anna Wilby
Director of Music
