Society history

Whilst golf has been enjoyed by Old Lyonians for most of the Old Lyonian Association's history, our records show the 'Golf Section' being put on a formal footing only in 1961, when the first formally documented competition was held at Northwood Golf Club. It was won by Malcolm Ames, who remains a supporter to this day.

Today, the Old Lyonian Golf Society holds two formal meetings each year.

The Spring Meeting is traditionally held on the first Thursday of May at Northwood Golf Club, where three titles are competed for:

  • The Northwood Cup for the best individual Stableford score off handicap
  • The President’s Cup awarded to the lowest individual gross score off scratch
  • The Captain’s Cup which is competed for in the afternoon for the best pair in a handicap Greensome Competition

The Autumn Competition takes place on the last Friday in September at Stanmore Golf Club, where two trophies are competed for:

  • Mike’s Mug’ for the best individual Stableford score off handicap
  • The Campbell Paines Jug for the best individual Medal score off scratch

In addition to the two meetings, the Society plays a series of matches during the long summer evenings of May, June and July against Old Haberdashers, Old Millhillians, Old Merchant Taylors, Old Canfordians, UCS Old Boys and Old Gaytonians. These are at various venues, such as Moor Park, Denham and Stanmore.

The Society also enters a team into The Grafton Morrish, which is a National Old Boys competition played off scratch, with qualifying at Wimbledon and the finals at Hunstanton.

The current Secretary of the Society is John Davies - This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it - he is always delighted to hear from anybody interested in playing:

"All old boys, whatever their handicap (and, indeed, those without a handicap), are most welcome," says John.
