Dr. Oliver Smith Memorial Concert (1978 - 2007)
A wonderful concert given in memory of Dr. Oliver Smith (1978 - 2007), Head Boy of the John Lyon School (1995-1996) on Saturday, December 3rd at 7.30 p.m., St. John's Church, Greenhill.
A programme of attractive music for the festive season, which included Christmas motets, songs and carols performed by The Anselm Singers and friends incl. former Lyonians, Soprano soloist Diane Rees and conducted by John Barnard (OL).
Entrance was free with donations to St. Mark's Hospital and St. Luke's Hospice on exit.
John Barnard writes: Ollie was a very special person. He was enormously talented, committed, industrious, a friend to everyone who knew him, never short of a kind word, always radiating a joy in life with his glowing smile and infectious laugh.
He trained as a doctor, working as a Senior House Officer in both Northwick Park and St. Mark's Hospitals with ambitions to become a urologist. Ollie lost his life to bowel cancer which spread to his liver and lungs. That he should have been taken from us at such a young age is deeply painful to all of us who knew him.

Gym Master George Weedon 'TV Star' of BBC London 'From 1948 to 2012: London's Olympics in the frame'
The film explores the use of modern technology in sport and compares the training routines of 1948 Olympic gymnast, George Weedon with that of aspiring 2012 athlete, Peter Bakare.
George believes that too much emphasis is put on using fancy machines and athletes need to use more traditional methods of training.

LA Golf Society 15th/16th October 2010 - Dale Hill
The Old Lyonian Golf Society Trip to Dale Hill Friday 15th/Saturday 16th October played for a grand total of four trophies as well as other smaller prizes.
The JEK Clarke Salver was awarded for the best combined gross score across the two rounds. This was historically played for many years ago when there was an annual event in Sherbourne and I am very grateful to Robert and Peter Clarke for allowing us to incorporate this trophy into what I very much hope will be an annual event. This year's winner of The JEK Clarke Salver was Peter Hines who finished two shots ahead of John Davies despite both having spectacular collapses over the back nine on Saturday.
The Jon Jones Trophy for the winning Stableford score over The Old Course on Friday was John Orchard with a spectacular 45 points with Roger Baker in 2nd place on 39 points. Nearest The Pin was Roger baker and nearest the pin in two was David Palmer.was won by .
The Saturday Stableford over the challenging Woosnam Course in windy conditions was won by Chris Mellor with a very creditable 39 points with Mike Christelow second on 37 points. Nearest the pin was Robert Wickner and nearest the pin in two was Simon Flamank.
The Joe Kerridge Cup for the best combined Stableford score across both Friday and Saturday's rounds was awarded to John Orchard who managed to hold his game together on Saturday under much pressure scoring 31 points and a creditable total of 76 points ahead of runner up Mike Christelow.
The Secretary's Salver (donated by Andrew Reed) is awarded to the participant who in the eyes of the Secretary had the best 'champagne moment' or carried out the most 'serious misdemeanor'. This year's winner was Roger Vessey - of course, we are unable to explain why!
Association Day - Saturday, 10th July 2010 - Sudbury
Following the speeches on the Saturday morning, three Old Lyonian cricket sides took on the might of the school at Sudbury. An U14 side containing Mr Ling and Mr Mills, a combined U15/2nd X1 team joined by Mr Longhurst and the 1st X1 played against the Old Boys in three extremely competitive matches. Many thanks to all the Old Lyonians who came down to support the event and especially all those that came down to play! Unsurprisingly, a few pints were enjoyed in the White Horse after the game!
The 1st X1 played a very recent leavers X1 made up of players who either left in 2008 or 2009. The O.L's batted first scoring 167-9 in their allotted overs. Rishi Patel top scored with 55, supported by Priyan Patel 20 and Anuj Patel 21. The pick of the school bowlers was Bhavesh Makwana taking 2-19 from his spell. In reply the 1st X1 scored 168-5 with three overs to spare, winning by 5 wickets. Ahsen Jamil top scored with 55, Amaan Patel 28 and Ben Marsh 23 and Ravi Patel 23 not out steering the school side to victory.

A depleted 2nd XI took on the Old Lyonians. Batting first, JLS, comprising mainly year 10 pupils, put on a competitive total of 173 for 9 off of their allocation of 30 overs. Bhavin Makwana played a sensible captain's innings, scoring a well-paced 29. He was supported in a 50 partnership by Oscar Smyth who scored 37 and took full advantage of the shorter leg side boundary. After 3 quick wickets, the innings was drifting along to a fair total until Kavan Singh came in at number 7 and hit a quick fire 40 before holing out attempting another 6.
In reply, the Old Lyonians got off to a very poor start, losing both openers within the first 5 overs, thanks to a good opening spell from Ricky Singh and Oscar Smyth. However, the middle order all chipped in with some decent scores - Amar Mehta 27, Oliver Butler 27 and Niraj Rughani 37 - to approach JLS' total. After their dismissals, Paul Choy (23) kept the score board ticking over and skilfully rotated the strike with the lower order. However, he was undone by Makwana, who took the pace off the ball to pick up 3 wickets. After Choy was out, JLS dismissed the lower order to win by 16 runs.
Thanks to all JLS pupils and the Old Lyonians who gave up their time to make the day a great success with the match being played in a great spirit.
CL
The Year 9 cricket side including the youthful teachers Mr Ling and Mr Mills took on a very experienced Old Boys team on a hot, sunny Association Day at Sudbury. With Mr Ling as captain of Year 9 (!), he started well by losing the toss and was put into the field.
Opening bowlers Vekaria and Mudumbai bowled a nice, tight line not giving many runs away but the Old Lyonian's openers Burgess and Choudhury were stubborn and started to build an innings. The 2nd change bowler, M.Mirza, got the wicket the Year 9's were after by bowling Burgess for 21. Mr Mills (off spin) and Mr Ling (fastish) came on to bowl and rolled back the years; Choudhury was bowled for 36.
The Old Lyonian's batmen all made solid starts, Silvester 14, Blake 12, Sodha 14, but Mr Mills kept taking wickets finishing with figures of 6 overs, 5 wickets for 23 runs. Mandair and O.Mirza chipped in with a wicket each and the Old Lyonians finished their innings on 168 all out off 30 overs.
Year 9 opening batsman O.Mirza was in a rush with a quick fire 15 off 5 balls but was then bowled on the 6th ball! At the other end Adewale settled in for an excellent innings of 41, with good support from Banks 14 and Mr Ling's 20/20 style 21.
Some over excitement saw Talati, Shale and Vekaria all come and go without scoring! Adewale nearly saw the innings though but was dismissed with an excellent catch from Sanjiv. With 70 runs needed off 8 overs to win, a few big 6's later and great support from Kanabar 5, and man of the match Mardair 10, Mr Mills's quick fire 45 saw the Year 9's home to win with 3 overs to spare.

Old Lyonians v Old Canfordians Golf Match - Tuesday, 6th July 2010 - Denham Golf Club
Teams of 6 played at Denham golf club on 6 July 2010. The beautiful weather and great course conditions proved as enjoyable as the evening meal in the local hostelry in Denham Village.
The Old Lyonian team of Andrew Reed, John Wilson, Rick Harragin, Robert Clarke, Paul Hickey and David Jacks lost the match 2 - 1, even though John Davies, who played for Canford because of the lack of numbers, managed to lose his match!
The event is extremely enjoyable and I hope anybody wanting to play will put forward their names early for next year to avoid disappointment.
