WHAT IS THE 1876 FUND

Donating to support the 1876 Fund through regular donations makes it possible to support exciting opportunities beyond the standard curriculum and departmental budgets. These projects enrich learning experiences with an immediate and direct impact to pupils that will stay with them for a lifetime. It continues the philanthropic vision of our founder by directly supporting a broad educational experience. Through generous regular donations, the 1876 Fund has been able to support various projects.

The 1876 Reading Room, located in the Red House and opened by Professor Lord Robert Winston in 2017 is used by boys on the Excellence Programme where pupils have access to publications for enhancing knowledge in a peaceful space.

We have been able to offer the opportunity to build and race an electric car as part of the STEAM initiative. Once restrictions from Covid are lifted we hope to be able to race our car against other Schools in Autumn 2021.

Purchasing Vex Robots means Robotics can be introduced into the STEAM curriculum. Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics are used as access points for guiding student enquiry and critical thinking. Every Lower School pupil will be able to learn the increasingly required skill of building and coding robots.

In the Sports department we have been able to purchase hockey goal keeper kits and some branded corner flags for the football pitches at Sudbury.

The Maths department will be creating an in-house interactive series of presentations of mathematical artefacts and demonstrations pieces, devised and delivered by the further mathematician groups to the younger pupils.

A generous donor enabled the 1876 Fund to purchase a camera DZO FILMS 20-70 zoom lens that will boost the pupils' skills when filming and broadcasting School events as the lens has the superb capability of holding its focus whilst zooming in and out.

The English department invited Matt Dickinson, Everest Summiteer and author of the Mortal Chaos and Everest Files Teen fiction trilogies, for a unique creative writing workshop with Year 10 pupils.

The 1876 Fund has made it possible to participate in the 2019 National Theatre Connections Scheme. An incredible opportunity for those passionate for the Arts to perform at one of the national theatre venues!

Every gift makes a difference - by giving in numbers we can make an even bigger difference! We encourage parents and Old Lyonians to consider joining the 1876 Fund to benefit future pupils as they have benefited over the years.
